Billionaire Bill Ackman, CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management, and a group of investors are the buyers of a duplex penthouse inside One57 at 157 West 57th Street. The One57 building has two penthouses, both of which have now sold for more than $90 million and will most likely become the most expensive apartments ever sold in New York City. Since the buyers are still “in contract” to buy the unit, 15 Central Park West will hold that title for a little while longer. Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian billionaire, purchased a 15 Central Park West penthouse for $88 million in February of last year.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Ackman doesn’t intend to move into the apartment—it seems that it was a strategic purchase as an investment. Whatever the reason, he now holds one of New York City’s most precious units. The 13,554 square-foot apartment occupies the 75th and 76th floors. The highest unit in the building, which occupies the 89th and 90th floors, also sold for more than $90 million—it has 11,000 square feet. Ackman’s unit, known as the “winter garden duplex,” has a 51-foot-wide, glass-enclosed winter garden. Apparently, it was Interior designer Tony Ingrao who convinced Bill Ackman to go for the apartment.

Bill Ackman is not the first billionaire to be unveiled as a buyer of a One57 unit. Fashion moguls Lawrence Stroll and Silas Chou, best known for building Tommy Hilfiger into a billion-dollar brand, each signed a contract to buy a $50 million full-floor apartment. Still another buyer is Gary Barnett, founder and head of Extell Development which, in fact, is the developer of One57. While the buyer of the 89th and 90th floor duplex penthouse is still unknown, Barnett did indicate once that the buyers are a recognizable “very nice family” and that they intend to use the apartment as their residence.
