114 East 13th Street, which is known as the American Felt Building, is a very handsome apartment building which was built in 1909 right behind Luchow’s, the legendary German restaurant. It was once home to the American Felt Company, which gave the building its name. The company supplied hammers and bushings for a piano company. It was converted into condominium apartments in 1984, but its original charm has remained.
The loft apartments all have amazingly high ceilings and rooms with oversized windows. The walls are so robust and pressured that it’s almost impossible to hear the outside, which makes each apartment a haven for privacy. Union Square, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and many subway connections are all within a block or two.
