Kalahari

Kalahari is a new development that offers green living without sacrificing style or luxury. The LEED-certified building provides residents with a clear conscience, as 25percent of the building's energy is garnered from renewable sources, including solar and wind power. The green building also saves residents some "green" by using substantially less energy, 20 percent less than NYS energy code standards. Kalahari, named after a South African desert, has a façade that features decoration inspired by South African Ndebele tribal designs. Adinkra symbols, West African icons representing concepts like wisdom, unity and perseverance, adorn the columns. A sculpture by El Anatsui, a Ghanaian artist, hangs in the lobby.

The green aspects of the Kalahari continue into the luxurious apartments, as well. The units each feature ionic and plexi air filters, improving the air quality. Low-VOC emission building materials also contribute to a healthier environment. The homes feature energy-efficient appliances and renewable and eco-friendly materials, such as sustainable bamboo flooring throughout the home. The kitchens feature stainless steel, Energy Star-rated Kitchen Aid Architect series appliances, stone countertops with full-height glass back splashes, and European-style maple-finish cabinetry. The bathrooms are equally well appointed with luxurious Crema Ella marble, six-foot soaking tubs, separate glass shower enclosures, and Kohler sinks and fixtures. Most of the residences also include energy-saving Bosch washer and dryer units as an additional convenience.

The development continues its green elements and practices throughout the building and grounds. There are green roofs, and the landscaped public courtyards contain native plants that are both beautiful and sustainable. The development has an on-site Zipcar location with Hybrid cars available to keep residents green, even on the go. Luxury services include a doorman and concierge as well as attended parking. The Amenities include an on-site fitness center, squash court, roof deck, courtyard, community meeting center, and an independent film center.
