Guess Who is Back: 56 Leonard Street

The financial crisis that destroyed anything and everything in its path included 56 Leonard Street. The result was a delay of nearly 4 years with the foundation having been set three years ago and with no work being done since. The wait is over and the construction work is expected to begin next week on the innovatively designed building. Being developed by Alexico and designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the building endured a good amount of criticism.

Neighbors think that the design of the building doesn’t fit the neighborhood, but what ultra-modern building does in a part of the city that is hundreds of years old, and Community Board members cannot understand why New York Law School would sell the site for $135.5 million in order to let this “monstrosity” to be built. We still think that the building deserves some respect for its individual design whether or not it bears resemblance to its neighbors.

Marketed by Corcoran Sunshine, prices for the units have yet to be released. Back in 2008 units were listed between $3.5 million and $35 million.

The building will offer its residences luxury amenities like a spa, screening room, steam room, yoga studio, fitness center, library and a children’s playroom. The highlight of the building is the unique design, which guarantees light flooded rooms and terraces with terrific views.
