It has been several years since we heard, for the first time, that the Rothschild mansion at 41 East 70th Street had been placed on the market. A long time has passed and many price changes have followed. Bloomberg News reported that the townhouse has been sold to an unknown buyer for $25 million.

The 28-foot-wide, 11,256-square-foot townhouse was built for Walter N. Rothschild and Carola Warbug-Rothschild in 1929. It boasts a 1,089-square-foot garden and many pre-war architectural details such as tall curved windows, decorative fireplaces, detailed ceiling with classic moldings and ornate decals of ocean life.

The Rothschild Mansion not only was owned by The Century Foundation, since 1958, but housed its office as well. With this sale they will be looking for new space, but with $25 million, they are bound to find something suitable, albeit not as grand. Click for more Upper East Side properties.
